Check what Monzo gives you first
A file straight from your bank will always be more accurate than one reconstructed from a PDF, so it is worth two minutes to check before converting anything. Monzo offers CSV and PDF, exported from the app, covering the full account history. If the period you need sits inside that, use it and skip this page.
Monzo is the one bank on this list where you may genuinely not need a converter, because the app exports a CSV covering your whole history. It is worth saying that plainly. Where people still end up here is when the PDF is what was sent on, which is the usual case for a landlord, an accountant or a benefits assessor, and reconstructing the spreadsheet from that document is quicker than asking for it again.
Downloading the statement from Monzo
Statements live in the account tab in the Monzo app, under statements and exports, and the online archive runs to the life of the account at the time of writing. Pick the period you need and download the PDF rather than printing to PDF from a screen, because a printed screen loses the transaction table structure the converter reads.
If the account has been closed, or the statement was forwarded to you by someone else, you will not have online banking access at all. That is the most common reason people end up converting a PDF: it is the only copy that exists.
Converting it to Excel or CSV
- Upload the Monzo PDF to the converter above. Several months in one file is fine, and so is a JPG or PNG if all you have is a scan or a photo. Password-protected PDFs work; enter the password when prompted and it is not stored.
- The pages are read, with OCR where the statement is a scan rather than text.
- Check the transactions on screen against the statement before you download anything.Monzo statements typically carry Date, Time, Type, Name, Category, Amount, Currency and Notes.
- Download the CSV and open it in Excel, Google Sheets, Numbers or LibreOffice, or import it into QuickBooks, Xero, FreshBooks or Sage.
Your first conversion runs without an account. A free account adds 7 free pages, and the monthly plans are priced by page count if you are working through years of statements or several clients.
What happens to your Monzo statement
Uploads travel over a 256-bit encrypted connection. There is no long-term file storage: the statement sits on the server only long enough to be read and is deleted 24 hours after upload. Conversion is fully automated, so no member of staff opens it, and nothing goes to a third party. The full privacy policy sets out the detail.
Reading a Monzo statement once it is in columns
Monzo exports are the richest of any bank on this list, carrying date and time separately, a transaction type, the merchant name, Monzo's own spending category, amount, currency, and any note or receipt text you added. The category field is genuinely useful and has no equivalent at the high-street banks. The PDF statement, by contrast, is deliberately plain and drops the category and notes entirely, so converting a Monzo PDF recovers less than the app export would give you.
Who converts Monzo statements, and why
Monzo customers rarely need a converter for their own use, because the app will hand them a full-history CSV. Where it comes up is when the PDF is what was sent on: a landlord, an accountant or a benefits assessor receives the statement rather than the export, and needs it as a spreadsheet. If it is your own account, use the app export first, and this page is honest enough to say so.
Monzo statement converter FAQs
How do I convert a Monzo bank statement to Excel?
Download the statement PDF from the account tab in the Monzo app, under statements and exports, upload it to the converter on this page, check the transactions it pulls out, and download the CSV. Excel opens a CSV natively, so you can save it as .xlsx from there if you want the native format. Your first conversion does not need an account.
Does Monzo let me download a statement as CSV or Excel directly?
Monzo offers CSV and PDF, exported from the app, covering the full account history. If what you need falls inside that window, use it, because a file straight from your bank will always be the most accurate. A converter is for everything outside it. Check your online banking, since banks change these limits.
How far back do Monzo statements go online?
The life of the account, at the time of writing, available from the account tab in the Monzo app, under statements and exports. That archive is PDF, which is the gap a converter fills.
Can I convert a scanned or photographed Monzo statement?
Yes. Scanned PDFs, JPG and PNG files all go through OCR, so a statement that was printed and scanned back in works, and so does a clear phone photograph. Use the original PDF when you still have it, since text-based PDFs are read directly and tend to be the most accurate.
Is it safe to upload a Monzo statement?
Uploads travel over a 256-bit encrypted connection, and the file is deleted from our servers 24 hours after upload. Conversion is fully automated, so no member of staff opens your statement, and nothing is passed to a third party.
What columns will the converted Monzo file have?
Monzo statements typically carry Date, Time, Type, Name, Category, Amount, Currency and Notes. The converter maps those into spreadsheet columns, so the output matches the shape of the statement you uploaded.
