Check what Barclays gives you first
A file straight from your bank will always be more accurate than one reconstructed from a PDF, so it is worth two minutes to check before converting anything. Barclays offers CSV, OFX, QIF and OFC, covering about the last 12 statements. If the period you need sits inside that, use it and skip this page.
Barclays is unusually generous on formats, offering CSV, OFX, QIF and OFC, and that covers most accounting software without any conversion at all. The limit is the depth: roughly the last twelve statements. A remortgage asking for statements from three years ago, or a self-assessment covering a closed tax year, falls outside it, and those are PDFs.
Downloading the statement from Barclays
Statements live in the Statements section of Online Banking or the Barclays app, chosen per account, and the online archive runs to five to seven years at the time of writing. Pick the period you need and download the PDF rather than printing to PDF from a screen, because a printed screen loses the transaction table structure the converter reads.
If the account has been closed, or the statement was forwarded to you by someone else, you will not have online banking access at all. That is the most common reason people end up converting a PDF: it is the only copy that exists.
Converting it to Excel or CSV
- Upload the Barclays PDF to the converter above. Several months in one file is fine, and so is a JPG or PNG if all you have is a scan or a photo. Password-protected PDFs work; enter the password when prompted and it is not stored.
- The pages are read, with OCR where the statement is a scan rather than text.
- Check the transactions on screen against the statement before you download anything.Barclays statements typically carry Date, Description, Amount and Balance.
- Download the CSV and open it in Excel, Google Sheets, Numbers or LibreOffice, or import it into QuickBooks, Xero, FreshBooks or Sage.
Your first conversion runs without an account. A free account adds 7 free pages, and the monthly plans are priced by page count if you are working through years of statements or several clients.
What happens to your Barclays statement
Uploads travel over a 256-bit encrypted connection. There is no long-term file storage: the statement sits on the server only long enough to be read and is deleted 24 hours after upload. Conversion is fully automated, so no member of staff opens it, and nothing goes to a third party. The full privacy policy sets out the detail.
Reading a Barclays statement once it is in columns
Barclays uses the standard UK abbreviation set in its description column, so you will see BGC for a bank giro credit, DD for a direct debit, SO for a standing order, FPI and FPO for faster payments in and out, and CHQ for a cheque. Card payments carry the merchant name followed by a location. The abbreviations are only two or three characters and sit inline with the rest of the description, which makes them nearly impossible to total in a PDF and trivial once each is its own filterable value.
Who converts Barclays statements, and why
Barclays covers a very broad UK retail base, so the common jobs are equally broad: self-assessment returns where HMRC wants the year evidenced, rental applications where a letting agent asks for three to six months, and Universal Credit or benefit reviews where an assessor wants to see a specific period. The twelve-statement export limit means anything touching a closed tax year is a PDF job.
Barclays statement converter FAQs
How do I convert a Barclays bank statement to Excel?
Download the statement PDF from the Statements section of Online Banking or the Barclays app, chosen per account, upload it to the converter on this page, check the transactions it pulls out, and download the CSV. Excel opens a CSV natively, so you can save it as .xlsx from there if you want the native format. Your first conversion does not need an account.
Does Barclays let me download a statement as CSV or Excel directly?
Barclays offers CSV, OFX, QIF and OFC, covering about the last 12 statements. If what you need falls inside that window, use it, because a file straight from your bank will always be the most accurate. A converter is for everything outside it. Check your online banking, since banks change these limits.
How far back do Barclays statements go online?
Five to seven years, at the time of writing, available from the Statements section of Online Banking or the Barclays app, chosen per account. That archive is PDF, which is the gap a converter fills.
Can I convert a scanned or photographed Barclays statement?
Yes. Scanned PDFs, JPG and PNG files all go through OCR, so a statement that was printed and scanned back in works, and so does a clear phone photograph. Use the original PDF when you still have it, since text-based PDFs are read directly and tend to be the most accurate.
Is it safe to upload a Barclays statement?
Uploads travel over a 256-bit encrypted connection, and the file is deleted from our servers 24 hours after upload. Conversion is fully automated, so no member of staff opens your statement, and nothing is passed to a third party.
What columns will the converted Barclays file have?
Barclays statements typically carry Date, Description, Amount and Balance. The converter maps those into spreadsheet columns, so the output matches the shape of the statement you uploaded.
