Check what Chase gives you first

A file straight from your bank will always be more accurate than one reconstructed from a PDF, so it is worth two minutes to check before converting anything. Chase offers CSV, QFX for Quicken and QBO for QuickBooks, from the Activity page rather than the statement itself, covering roughly the last two years, and capped at about 1,000 rows per download. If the period you need sits inside that, use it and skip this page.

Chase splits the two things apart, and that is what catches people out. The Activity page will hand you a clean CSV, but it only reaches back about two years and stops at around a thousand rows. The statements themselves go back seven years, and those are PDFs only. So the moment you need 2021 for an audit, or more than a thousand transactions in one go, the CSV route closes and the PDF is what you have left.

Downloading the statement from Chase

Statements live in Statements & Documents, reached from the account you want after signing in to chase.com or the Chase mobile app, and the online archive runs to seven years at the time of writing. Pick the period you need and download the PDF rather than printing to PDF from a screen, because a printed screen loses the transaction table structure the converter reads.

If the account has been closed, or the statement was forwarded to you by someone else, you will not have online banking access at all. That is the most common reason people end up converting a PDF: it is the only copy that exists.

Converting it to Excel or CSV

  1. Upload the Chase PDF to the converter above. Several months in one file is fine, and so is a JPG or PNG if all you have is a scan or a photo. Password-protected PDFs work; enter the password when prompted and it is not stored.
  2. The pages are read, with OCR where the statement is a scan rather than text.
  3. Check the transactions on screen against the statement before you download anything.Chase statements typically carry Transaction Date, Post Date, Description, Category, Type and Amount.
  4. Download the CSV and open it in Excel, Google Sheets, Numbers or LibreOffice, or import it into QuickBooks, Xero, FreshBooks or Sage.

Your first conversion runs without an account. A free account adds 7 free pages, and the monthly plans are priced by page count if you are working through years of statements or several clients.

What happens to your Chase statement

Uploads travel over a 256-bit encrypted connection. There is no long-term file storage: the statement sits on the server only long enough to be read and is deleted 24 hours after upload. Conversion is fully automated, so no member of staff opens it, and nothing goes to a third party. The full privacy policy sets out the detail.

Reading a Chase statement once it is in columns

Chase descriptions are long and front-loaded with the channel rather than the merchant, so a card payment arrives as something like "ORIG CO NAME" followed by the trading name, and Zelle, ACH and wire entries each carry their own prefix before anything human-readable. Recurring card payments often include a merchant city and a state code at the end, which is useful for spotting a subscription billed from somewhere you have never been. In a PDF all of this runs together in one narrow column. In a spreadsheet you can split on the prefix and group by merchant, which is what makes a year of Chase activity readable at all.

Who converts Chase statements, and why

Chase is the largest retail bank in the US, so the range here is wide: sole traders reconciling a business checking account against invoices, people assembling two years of statements for a mortgage pre-approval, and executors working through a deceased relative's account where online access has already been closed. That last group is the one the activity export cannot help at all, because there is no login left to download from. What exists is whatever PDFs were saved or posted.

Chase statement converter FAQs

How do I convert a Chase bank statement to Excel?

Download the statement PDF from Statements & Documents, reached from the account you want after signing in to chase.com or the Chase mobile app, upload it to the converter on this page, check the transactions it pulls out, and download the CSV. Excel opens a CSV natively, so you can save it as .xlsx from there if you want the native format. Your first conversion does not need an account.

Does Chase let me download a statement as CSV or Excel directly?

Chase offers CSV, QFX for Quicken and QBO for QuickBooks, from the Activity page rather than the statement itself, covering roughly the last two years, and capped at about 1,000 rows per download. If what you need falls inside that window, use it, because a file straight from your bank will always be the most accurate. A converter is for everything outside it. Check your online banking, since banks change these limits.

How far back do Chase statements go online?

Seven years, at the time of writing, available from Statements & Documents, reached from the account you want after signing in to chase.com or the Chase mobile app. That archive is PDF, which is the gap a converter fills.

Can I convert a scanned or photographed Chase statement?

Yes. Scanned PDFs, JPG and PNG files all go through OCR, so a statement that was printed and scanned back in works, and so does a clear phone photograph. Use the original PDF when you still have it, since text-based PDFs are read directly and tend to be the most accurate.

Is it safe to upload a Chase statement?

Uploads travel over a 256-bit encrypted connection, and the file is deleted from our servers 24 hours after upload. Conversion is fully automated, so no member of staff opens your statement, and nothing is passed to a third party.

What columns will the converted Chase file have?

Chase statements typically carry Transaction Date, Post Date, Description, Category, Type and Amount. The converter maps those into spreadsheet columns, so the output matches the shape of the statement you uploaded.

Other banks

The converter is not working from a list of banks, so any statement will upload. These pages cover the export limits and statement archives bank by bank.
