As with most of the large US banks, Citi treats live activity and archived statements as two separate things. The activity export is fine for reconciling the current month. The seven-year statement archive, which is what you need for a loan application or a tax year that has already closed, is PDF.

Downloading the statement from Citibank

Statements live in the Statements section of Citi Online, selected per account and period, and the online archive runs to seven years at the time of writing. Pick the period you need and download the PDF rather than printing to PDF from a screen, because a printed screen loses the transaction table structure the converter reads.

If the account has been closed, or the statement was forwarded to you by someone else, you will not have online banking access at all. That is the most common reason people end up converting a PDF: it is the only copy that exists.

Reading a Citibank statement once it is in columns

Citi runs debits and credits in separate columns with the description in between, and uses abbreviated channel codes at the start of the line for ACH, debit card and online transfer activity. International customers see a second currency and an exchange rate appended to the description rather than held in their own fields, so a statement with foreign spending on it needs those pulled apart before the totals reconcile. That is the kind of job a spreadsheet does in one formula and a PDF does not do at all.
